Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
